Methodology

About the calculations

The dashboard uses prize tiers published by state lottery sites to estimate how attractive each scratch-off game is after some prizes have already been paid out.

Source fields

Each state publishes slightly different fields. New Jersey exposes total tickets printed directly. New York exposes tier odds and paid/remaining counts, so total tickets printed is estimated from those tier odds. Connecticut exposes total tickets, overall odds, and remaining unclaimed prizes. When Connecticut lists an annuity prize with a published cash option, EV uses the cash option value.

  • winningTickets: original winning tickets in that prize tier.
  • paidTickets: winning tickets already paid.
  • claimedTickets: winning tickets claimed but not necessarily paid yet.
  • prizeAmount: prize value, stored by the feed in cents.
  • totalTicketsPrinted: original ticket count for the game.
  • overall_odds: NY listed odds, used to estimate total tickets printed.
  • Unclaimed Prizes: CT remaining prizes for a tier.
  • endDistributionDate: used to exclude games whose sales/distribution period has ended.

Remaining prizes

Remaining prizes are calculated tier by tier, then rolled up into total remaining winners and prize money left.

NJ unavailable prizes = max(paidTickets, claimedTickets) NJ remaining prizes = winningTickets - unavailable prizes remaining tier value = remaining prizes * prize amount remaining prize money = sum of remaining tier values

Adjusted EV

Expected value is the estimated average prize value of one ticket. Because the public feed does not publish exact unsold-ticket inventory, the app estimates remaining tickets from prize availability.

prize availability = remaining winning tickets / original winning tickets estimated tickets remaining = total tickets printed * prize availability adjusted EV = remaining prize money / estimated tickets remaining

Adjusted return

Adjusted return expresses adjusted EV as a percentage of the ticket price. A $10 ticket with a $7.45 adjusted EV has a 74.5% adjusted return.

adjusted return = adjusted EV / ticket price

These values are useful for comparing games, but they are estimates. Exact current odds would require live unsold-ticket or sales data that the public state feeds do not expose.
